Elder si usa in riferimento alle relazioni familiari: I have an elder sister, ho una sorella maggiore; Roger is the elder of the two brothers, Roger è il maggiore dei due fratelli. Negli altri casi si usa older: older pupils, gli studenti più grandi; the older generation, la generazione più anziana. Non si può dire elder than, bisogna invece usare older than: Rosalind is older than Martin, Rosalind è più vecchia di Martin.
